Who’s Bigger? Lady Gaga or Radiohead?
I love messing around in The Next Big Sound. They measure musicians’ online popularity by tracking plays, fans, and comments in an intuitive, attractive dashboard.
Their charts are great for finding out what the kids are listening to, but I really like the service for fact-checking “who’s bigger” hunches. Here’s Lady Gaga vs. Radiohead (click the link to change the view):
And if you want to get weird, here’s Katy Perry vs. Skrillex vs. Pearl Jam vs Moby.
Next Big Sound isn’t perfect; I’d love to see data from iTunes and Spotify, fan sites, and concerts. However, they’ve made a great product that’s almost certainly directionally accurate.
I’d also bet on them from a business perspective. Smart, data-based decisions might just be just the thing the languishing music industry needs.
